Today’s gospel reading about the master who entrusted his servants with talents and then went on a journey, is thought provoking. I admit that for a long time I didn’t understand it. Maybe I am still trying to figure it out.

One commentary on this gospel suggests the following: The servants who doubled their investment proved they could be trusted with bigger things. Fear kept the servant with one talent from doing anything further with it.

This is still pertinent today. We all have gifts. If we are honest with ourselves, we can discern what they are. Consider this list: working with others, problem solving, peacemaking, making people laugh, being a good listener, cheering others on, sharing our faith, running a business, playing an instrument, cooking, teaching, sewing, coaching, and the list goes on.

What keeps each of us, like the unproductive servant, from stepping out and sharing our gifts? Fear of failure, thinking we don’t have time, feeling tired, being discouraged by past experiences, all of these excuses can keep us from sharing our ‘talents’ to help build God’s kingdom.

I recall when I first stepped into the role of choir director for Annunciation. To say that I was scared silly to play the organ was an understatement. I recall one warm and sincere seasoned parishioner telling me to “Take a flyer, Nance, it’ll be OK if you make a mistake.” I still smile when I think of his kind words.

The thing about stretching ourselves beyond our comfort level is it helps us to grow. Do you want to remain like the fearful servant who hid his talent and accomplished nothing? Or are you curious to see what else God has in store for you when you share your gifts and
He trusts you with bigger things?
