The God of Newness
Today’s gospel reading is short but so amazing. God only asks one thing of us, to love one another as God has loved us. Compare that command to all the challenges you have heard in your lifetime. Make something of yourself, go to college, get a degree and if you are really wise don’t stop at a college degree go on for a Masters, and a PhD.
Or make a name for yourself by making tons of money, or do something that will make you famous, a star or a celebrity. Sure we have to act as mature adults and support ourselves and our families. But do we get so caught up with pushing the envelope further and further out that we lose sight of the things in life that really matter?
The second reading from Revelation should touch our hearts if we are really listening. God is waiting for the end time when earth as we know it will pass so that God will literally dwell among us, heaven and earth will be one, together in one place, and there will be no more death or mourning, wailing or pain. God will even wipe every tear from our eyes.
This place we call earth will be made anew. God promised, “Behold, I make all things new.” God has never broken a promise made to any human.
Do I work at loving God, myself, and others as God has, and is loving me right this very minute? Take a few moments today to reflect on your life and notice how God has been there for you all the days of your life. There are no coincidences. God did write with your crooked lines and God did answer your prayers far beyond what you asked for.
If you still don’t see God at work in and through you, ask for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Then listen. God loves you as you are right now but loves you too much to leave you where you are. It’s called transformation.
Have a great week and don’t forget to look for God’s daily surprises in your life!
