God Is Always At Work On Our Behalf

Next weekend we celebrate the great feast of Christ the King. In preparation for that feast our readings today are sobering, almost scary. Yet, we are reminded that only God the Father knows the day and the hour that will actually be the end of time as we understand it. This reminder is a heads-up so that we may use our time now to get our hearts ready to meet our God.

In the first years following Jesus’ death and resurrection, his followers believed that Jesus would return during their lifetime. They were instructed to pay attention to the signs: Jesus coming in the clouds with great power and glory, unsurpassed distress, and angels sent down by God to gather His elect from the end of the earth to the end of the sky.

It took awhile but Paul and the early Christians finally realized the end-time wasn’t going to happen in the first century. Paul’s letter though, does offer us great hope, “But this one offered one sacrifice for sins, … for by one offering he has made perfect forever those who are being consecrated.” That’s you and me, folks. We have been redeemed. This means that God has again extended the invitation to us to be part of an intimate and personal relationship with God as God’s adopted sons or daughters of God.

God never turns away from us no matter how far we turn away or try to run from God. At the same time God loves us too much to let us stay at the level of development we have currently achieved. God’s love draws us to become all that God has created us to be. It is also part of God’s plan that we help build the kingdom of heaven here on earth, the one that is to last forever.

Questions we need to ask ourselves: Am I moving toward or away from my relationship with God and how am I helping to build God’s kingdom now?
